DDC Opinion rejects indirect connection
Diverse Diversity Campaign has today issued an opinion piece dissociating the Campaign and its Director from a political party with which it might be perceived to have an indirect connection.
The disclaimer was issued because the Director, Ken Petrie, is the Deputy Chair of Christian Democracy UK, a cross-party political think tank and campaign group seeking to discern and promote ethical values derived historically from the Christian ethos of European society, among those seeking to be active in modern politics.
The Chair of CDUK has recently joined and become a Regional Organiser for a party called Restore Britain which has a policy to ban Halal and Kosher slaughter. Such a policy would have a severely negative impact on Muslim and Jewish members of our society, amounting to persecution of Jews and Muslims by preventing them eating meat. As such, whatever the claimed basis for such a policy, its effect could only be anti-Islamic and Antisemitic. That is clearly contrary to Diverse Diversity and is something we would oppose vehemently.
Mr Petrie said, “While DDC is willing to work with anybody in promoting its understanding of fairness in society, it cannot accept or endorse policies in direct opposition to that understanding, and any such association would be highly embarrassing. I therefore have to be clear that while I am a colleague of Max in CDUK I cannot approve of the party he has recently joined because it appears Antisemitic and Anti-Islamic. I shall be seeking clarification on whether CDUK will remain tolerant of all Faiths, which is its declared position. My current understanding is that it intends to traverse a wide range of political positions and does not expect everyone to agree, but it is still a serious concern if it is led by an activist in such a party without a clear separation between the two. I approve of the declared aims of CDUK, but there is clearly an issue here to be addressed, and I intend to address it if I am to continue to work within CDUK.”
